Forecast: Near-record heat for Tampa Bay, with some areas flirting with 90

Sunny skies and warm temperatures will be the rule across Tampa Bay on Friday and through the weekend, until a cold front delivers an increased chance of rain Sunday night into the start of the work week.

Friday's forecast high of 87 will be about 7 degrees above normal and feel more like mid-May than the second week of April, according to the National Weather Service. It will flirt with the record of 89 set in 1974, and inland areas could approach 90.

Skies will be sunny throughout the day - an ideal day to check out the Sugar Sand Festival on Clearwater Beach - and with high humidity fueled by breezes from the southeast. A chance of summer-like afternoon showers will persist, mainly inland, forecasters said.

Those steamy conditions continue on Saturday, with highs approaching 90 but with building clouds and a chance for an afternoon shower.

A cold front on Sunday could produce a slightly higher chance of rain, but with highs dropping about 10 degrees on Monday and topping out around 79, forecasters said. It also will bring drier air for the early part of next week.
