ST. PETERSBURG -- The Rays placed Jeff Beliveau on the 15-day DL because of left shoulder soreness and recalled LHP C.J. Riefenhauser.
The Rays also optioned OF Mikie Mahtook to Durham and recalled INF Ryan Brett.
Beliveau said his arm hasn’t come out of the dead arm periods every pitcher experiences during spring training. He will be examined Saturday by Dr. Koco Eaton.
“We just want to get it before it gets worse,” Beliveau said.
3B Evan Longoria, who left Thursday’s win in Toronto after being drilled on the left hip with a pitch, will serve as the DH tonight. He said he’s fine and could return to third base Saturday.
Brett was recalled to give the Rays infield depth. They had playing short one infielder since the season began. This way they can cover Longoria if he is forced to DH for a couple of days. Manager Cash said it also gives the team some speed on the bench. That Brett can play the outfield gives them lineup options late in games.
RHP Alex Cobb said he will play catch Saturday at 90 feet. He said the tendinitis is gone from his right forearm, but he doesn’t know when he will progress to throwing a bullpen.
The Rays return from a 5-2 road trip to open nine-game homestand tonight with the first of three against the Yankees.
Rookie Nathan Karns will make his third start of the season for the Rays.
Here are the lineups:
Warren RHP (0-1, 1.69)
Karns RHP (1-1, 4.97)
