SOUTH TAMPA — Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful hosted a community cleanup recently with teenagers from the South Tampa YMCA who were interested in seeing a different side of their community.
By taking a stand against the litter that plagues the Sulphur Springs neighborhood, the group of 20 youths developed team building, leadership and data analysis skills while alerting residents that a cleaner, greener community can easily become a reality.
As some picked up litter with trash grabbers, others held trash bags to collect it. At the same time, they called out the types of litter they were finding as one person in the group used data cards to mark their announcements.
The volunteers collected more than 400 pounds of litter and separated recyclable materials from the trash.
“Hopefully the neighbors who witnessed the selfless acts of these teens will be encouraged to take personal responsibility for improving their local environment,” said Ryan Pafias, teenage program coordinator for the South Tampa YMCA.
