Retired accountant to be honored by YMCA for ‘making a difference’ in community

Joe Sedita, who for years has volunteered with organizations ranging from his church to the Cub Scouts, will be recognized for his efforts Aug. 25 by the Plant City Family’s YMCA.

The retired founder of an accounting and financial management firm will be presented with the YMCA’s prestigious Strong Leader of the Year at an annual banquet. The award has been presented since 2003 to a leader who has made an impact on the community.

Sedita, who said he just strives to use his “God-given gifts to make a positive difference in the world,” said he wasn’t expecting the accolades.

“I was surprised when they told me that I was going to receive it. It was quite an honor,” he said.

Sedita has spent years as a leader with many organizations, YMCA Executive Director Rick Gould said.

“He’s a great guy, he’s very humble ... but very deserving,” Gould said.

The Y’s board of directors selected Sedita from a list of names compiled by a subcommittee, he said. Sedita isn’t currently a member of the Y but earned the honors for his lengthy leadership with several organizations, Gould said.

Sedita has served as a Boy Scout cubmaster, assistant scoutmaster, PTA officer, Sunday school teacher and tutor. He also has held various leadership roles for the Plant City Boys & Girls Club, South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation and Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce.

Sedita said he likes to help any organization that helps youngsters.

“If it makes a difference for kids in our community, it’s for me. For me kids is the key,” he said.

Sedita has won many honors, including Plant City’s 2013 Outstanding Citizen of the Year; Paul Harris Award from The Rotary Foundation; Outstanding Alumnus from the University of South Florida Alumni Association’s Plant City chapter; District Award of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America Gulf Ridge Council; and the Outstanding Young Man Award from the Plant City Jaycees.

He’s also a member of a team of volunteers from First United Methodist Church of Plant City that helps other communities hit by natural disaster, such as a tornado-ravaged area in Alabama last year. Sedita is an active member of Plant City Toastmasters, which he helped establish in 1985.

Sedita and his wife of 46 years, Paula, have two sons and two daughter-in-laws: J.P. and Elizabeth; and Jeff and Meghan. His hobbies include spending time with family, public speaking, kayaking and riding his Harley-Davidson.

Previous Strong Leader of the Year winners include Mike Sparkman, 2003; Betty Chambers, 2004; Randy Larson, 2005; Cindy Churchill, 2006; Rick and Di Lott, 2007; Sherrie Mueller, 2008; Tommy Warnock, 2009; Fred Johnson, 2010; B.M. “Mac” Smith Jr., 2011; David Miller, 2012; Dave Robbins, 2013; and George Banning, 2014.
