PLANT CITY – The Plant City Family YMCA will offer free lessons next week to teach children how to be safe in and around water.
The 40-minute classes will be held daily, from March 9 to 12, at the pool at the YMCA, 1507 YMCA Place, off Alexander Street. There will be two sessions each day, 5:30 to 6:10 p.m. and 6:20 to 7 p.m., YMCA spokeswoman Leigh Scott said.
The courses are for children ages 3 to 12, including those who don’t know how to swim.
The lessons, during what the YMCA calls Splash Week, are taught by certified swim instructors and participants are grouped by ages. Classes will focus on water familiarization, pool rules, water safety rules, safe water entry and exit and more.
YMCA membership is not necessary; however, pre-registration is required due to limited space by calling the Y at (813) 757-6677.
Participants must bring their own swimsuit and towel.
All nine YMCAs in the area that have swimming pools are offering the swim safety courses, said Lalita Llerena, spokeswoman for the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA. The courses coincide with spring break from school, she said.
