Growing program offers learning activities for kids at Plant City Y

PLANT CITY A learning program for children ages 5 and younger has moved to the Plant City Family YMCA.

“Caring and Learning with Me” is offered Monday and Wednesday and Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at the center on 1507 YMCA Place. Classes focus on learning activities such as story time, art and outdoor exercises to help children prepare for preschool and kindergarten.

The 38-week course is free to the community and children and families are welcome to attend at their own time and pace and need not be members of the Plant City YMCA.

Instructor Miranda Vasquez Vasquez said that children must be accompanied by at least one caregiver and they try to follow the same schedule as a regular school calendar.

“The class is geared for caregivers and teaching how to prepare kids for preschool,” she said.

Vasquez said their goal is to facilitate a learning environment to give children skills and experience that will help prepare them for preschool.

“There are a lot of programs for children about this age but most of them are not free,” she said.

Plant City Family YMCA Director Rick Gould said they hope to host the program at the center annually.

“This is something we haven’t had in Plant City in a long time,” he said. “That’s the key to the program is that parents are staying and interacting with their kids.”

For more information call program director Marta Laos at (813) 676-5070 ext. 1279. Parents and caregivers can also register in person at the Plant City Family YMCA.
