TAMPA — At the Tampa Bay YMCA, Thanksgiving doesn’t stop after Turkey Day or Black Friday.
The Tampa Bay YMCAs are participating in Giving Tuesday on Dec. 2, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. The day will try to harness the power of social media to create a movement to improve local communities in the entire Tampa Bay area, giving back in better and smarter ways to charities and causes that are important to the community.
“It’s an honor to be a part of Giving Tuesday again this year. We welcome the opportunity to celebrate generosity and giving,” said YMCA Communications Director Lalita Llerena.
Every dollar donated to the county YMCAs on Giving Tuesday will help local families from children all the way up to senior citizens.
“The whole idea is to take one day of the year to give something back,” Llerena said. “We are aware of Tampa Bay charities and want to be involved.”
She said that people don’t know how much the YMCA gives back to the communities and she wants to make people aware.
“People don’t realize what we are doing at the YMCA,” Llerena said. “We are involved in so many things. We work with LiveStrong, preventing drownings; we give scholarships to families that can’t normally go to the YMCA. People think of us as gymnasiums and swimming pools. We do a lot more than that.”
