TAMPA – “The Twelve Days of Christmas” may be a holiday staple to some, but, at the Northwest Hillsborough Family YMCA, it means a chance to get rid of some of those extra holiday pounds before making any New Year’s resolutions.
There’s plenty going on at the YMCA, but the 12 Days of Fitness Challenge is a highlight of the holiday season. Before Dec. 31, competitors must complete 12 of 15 fitness related challenges ranging from simply bringing a friend to taking a yoga class to “liking” a trainer’s corner site on the YMCA Facebook fitness page.
Some of the tasks are easy and some require some extra effort, but the program is designed to keep members in shape during the holidays when it is natural to add a few extra holiday pounds.
“There are plenty of ways people can fill out their cards,” said program director Marilyn Gyselinck. “We have plenty of people who want to be involved and it is exciting for everyone involved.”
There’s more going on at the YMCA. On Dec. 13, the YMCA Leader’s Club will host a holiday sleepover for kids ages 5 to 10. There will be plenty of Christmas activities, games, and arts and crafts. The event will run from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. Cost is $25 for members, $40 for non-members, and $10 for a second child, but the kids don’t really have to leave at 8 a.m. because there will be a special Breakfast with Santa Claus from 9 to 11 a.m. the next morning when they can enjoy pancakes with Saint Nick. There will also be a bounce house. Santa will be available for photos.
“We do a lot here for the kids and Breakfast with Santa is always fun,” Gyselinck said. “We’ll also have Christmas karaoke and plenty of cookies. It will be a lot of fun.”
