Pilot Bank moves to new site on Bruce B. Downs
NEW TAMPA - Pilot Bank on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard is moving to a more visible spot on the thoroughfare. At the end of business Friday, the bank that has been a 15-year fixture at Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Regents Park Drive will shut down operations there. The Tampa-based banking institution will reopen Monday in a newly remodeled building about a mile away, Pilot Bank President and Chief Executive Officer Roy Hellwege said. The bank is replacing a former KFC restaurant near the Home Depot and Sweetbay Supermarket at Highwoods Preserve Parkway and Bruce B. Downs. "It has better visibility," Hellwege said. "We have been able to upgrade the overall look of the facility to bring it up to match our new branding."Pilot Bank's longtime New Tampa location was beginning to show its age, the veteran Tampa Bay area banking executive said. Rather than invest money to fix up the existing bank site, Hellwege decided to find a more prominent spot in the heart of the area's commercial district. Pilot Bank officials hired a company to gut the vacant fast-food restaurant, build drive-up bays and make cosmetic changes to reflect the bank's modern image. "We have done a complete upgrade, including the interior and exterior," Hellwege said. The four-person operation at 17635 Bruce B. Downs Blvd. also will serve as the part-time headquarters for Pilot Bank Region President Chris Willman. Pilot Bank was formed in September 1987 as a state bank under the original charter name of The Terrace Bank of Florida. Pilot Bancshares Inc., the holding company, was established in 1995. The New Tampa location at Bruce B. Downs and Regents Park Drive opened in October 1997. The company changed its name to Pilot Bank in 2005.
