TAMPA — A University of Florida student from Hillsborough County was arrested Tuesday after a woman said he sexually assaulted her in late 2016, when he was 20 and she was 17, Gainesville police reported.
Christopher J. Podlin, now 21, faces a charge of sexual battery.
The woman told police the two met on Instagram and got together to study on Dec. 3, 2016. She agreed to be his date to a Kappa Sigma fraternity function four days later at Boca Fiesta, an events venue, but when she became intoxicated he took her to the Kappa Sigma fraternity house, police reported.
Once there, Podlin gave her a shirt to change into and began to assault her as she tried to put it on, the report alleges. She said she pleaded with him to use a condom and pretended to pass out, but he removed the condom and assaulted her a second time.
Afterward, she told police, he sent text messages, which she provided to them.
"Listen I’m so sorry," said one quoted in the report. "I had no intentions of hooking up until you basically got fully naked."
The report does not explain the delay in charging Podlin.
Family members at his home in Odessa declined to comment Thursday.
