BROOKSVILLE — Hernando sheriff’s deputies seized 90 animals on Tuesday and arrested a woman on animal cruelty and animal mistreatment charges after people called with concerns about an ill horse.
Crystal Robin Crawford, 46, was arrested but not taken to jail. She was given a misdemeanor summons to appear in court and faces $46,000 in county ordinance violations, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.
One horse had to be euthanized, Sheriff Al Nienhuis said in a Facebook video. It was unclear if the horse was ill because of neglect or natural causes, he said.
Deputies found two other horses, three dogs, 10 cats, one goat, 14 chickens, 11 ducks, one cockatoo and 44 rabbits, plus four dead rabbits on the property at 16266 Sacramento Ave. The dogs were improperly tethered, the sheriff said, and the birds didn’t have enough water.
The living animals will be taken to Hernando County Animal Services, Nienhuis said. The Sheriff’s Office said it has had no prior interaction with Crawford or the property.
