Tampa memorial for "Fight Doctor" Ferdie Pacheco to be held Thursday

TAMPA — A memorial service for "The Fight Doctor" Ferdie Pacheco will be held Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Centro Asturiano, 1913 N Nebraska Ave.

He died in his Miami home on November 16 at the age of 89.

Born and raised in Ybor City, Pacheco became known as "The Fight Doctor" for his years spent as ringside physician to boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

He later won two Emmy Awards as a television boxing analyst, produced a gallery full of distinctive paintings and wrote six books.

The Tampa memorial is open to the public. Pacheco’s art will be on display.

Speakers will include his wife Lusita Pacheco, historians E.J. Salcines and Rodney Kite-Powell and artists Paul and Eugenie Wilborn.

A memorial in Miami was held December 12 at the Lyric Theater.
