Former Polk teacher gets 22 years for child sex

The Polk County teacher who pleaded guilty to 37 counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor received 22 years in prison this afternoon.

Jennifer Fichter, 30, faced up to 15 years in prison per count when she was sentenced in Polk County Circuit Court. She has 30 days to appeal.

“We hope this sentence helps you change and become a different person so when you come out, you’re not the person you were before,” Judge Glenn Shelby told her.

Fichter was arrested last year over accusations that she had sex with three students while working as an English teacher at Central Florida Aerospace Academy in Lakeland.

Fichter still faces similar charges in Hillsborough County, where investigators said some of the sex with teens occurred.

After her arrest, Fichter was fired by the Polk school district.

She was jailed in April 2014 on charges that she had sexual relationships with two 17-year-old boys in separate cases. One of those teens impregnated her and she had an abortion, investigators said.

Fichter pleaded not guilty on June 17, 2014, to three counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor in Hillsborough County.
