Ybor City will soon have another national brand name operating on Seventh Avenue.
Officials with The Brass Tap company confirm they plan to open a bar/restaurant space at the entrance of the Centro Ybor complex, directly underneath the Hamburger Mary’s restaurant.
Previously, the site had been a series of fashion retailers. Contractors have already begun work on the site, and owners set an expected opening date in January, though there may be a private New Year’s Eve party before then.
This comes as more big-name companies start planting flags in the quirky, entertainment district that’s often considered the historic heart of Tampa.
Buffalo Wild Wings renovated and recently opened a space at 1625 E. 7th Ave. into an expansive bar/restaurant with dozens of television screens, and an open-air patio space. That followed the Jimmy John’s sandwich chain that opened a space in the heart of the Centro Ybor space. And 7-Eleven recently opened a convenience store in a renovated space at 1535 E. 7th. Other developers plan to open a four-star hotel with a national brand name at the western edge of the Seventh Avenue strip.
The new Ybor Brass Tap will be operated by a franchisee, Dwayne Waltrip of Brandon and his two sons, Desmond and David. That group has rights to open up to five locations, and they plan to open one in Sarasota and Orlando during next year. Tampa-based Brass Tap already has seven locations in the greater Tampa Bay area, and plans to open new sites in New York City, Atlanta, San Antonio, Dallas, and Charlotte in 2015.
