Ex-councilman takes on Air Force vet in District 60 race

TAMPA - Jobs, taxes and the environment are top priorities for the two candidates seeking the state House District 60 seat. Republican Shawn Harrison, a lawyer and former Tampa city councilman, is pitted against Democrat Russ Patterson, a retired Air Force officer, in a race to replace term-limited Republican Rep. Ed Homan. The district represents Lutz, North Tampa, Temple Terrace and Thonotosassa. "Florida's economy depends on quality job creation and low taxes encourage job creation," said Harrison.
He favors a regional transit system and also is a proponent of the Florida Forever program, a grant initiative to preserve natural resources. Patterson, in his first-ever bid for political office, champions an economic climate conducive to growing small businesses. "I see a Florida with a much more diversified economy that doesn't just depend on building subdivisions, office parks and roads to support our state," he said. He opposes the emphasis schools place on standardized testing and favors the use of solar and tidal energy. "We're the Sunshine State and we ought to act like it," he said.
