Obama veterans of Pod Save America podcast coming to Clearwater

They've been called the "it boys" of podcasting and the "opposite of right-wing rage," and the veterans of the Obama White House who helm the Pod Save America podcast are bringing their lefty live show to Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall next month.

Called Pod Tours America, the live show arrives April 5 at 8 p.m. with Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer, Tommy Vietor and "special guests" for a live conversation about politics.

Produced by Crooked Media, the digital company the hosts created as a liberal response to conservative talk radio, the podcast was launched in early 2017 after the election of Donald Trump. The hosts previously had a podcast called Keeping It 1600 where they used their insider perspective to riff on the 2016 presidential campaign.

Pod Save America now racks up more than 1.5 million subscribers per episode and has sold out live events across the U.S. and overseas. Earlier this month, HBO announced that the podcasters had struck a deal to produce a series of hour-long specials.

"They're the 'it boys' of podcasting," Jill Abramson, the former executive editor of the New York Times, told London's Guardian. "They have the young liberal demographic sewn up in the same way (Daily Show host) Jon Stewart did on cable in 2000. It's the show everyone wants to be on."

Favreau was Obama's star speechwriter, Lovett his chief joke writer, Pfeiffer his White House communications director and Vietor his spokesman for the National Security Council, among other roles.

By riffing on politics and the media, the podcast struck gold in the age of divided political factions.

Tickets are $28.75-$73.25 at the Ruth Eckerd Hall box office, 1111 McMullen-Booth Road, or by calling (727) 791-7400. rutheckerdhall.com.
