Sorry, iron-gutted fair food enthusiasts. The votes are in, and you will not be eating the Deep Fried Oreo Burger at this year’s Florida State Fair. But fear not, there is another unholy marriage of meat and sweet on the menu for those willing to brave caloric calamity.
Say hello to the Funnel Cake Burger. It’s a beef patty with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and pickle served between two crunchy glazed funnel cakes — those deliciously greasy treats made from batter poured through a funnel into a hot fryer.
The Funnel Cake Burger joins the Parmesan Crusted Burger (a twice fried patty coated with a potato chip/parmesan-Romano cheese mixture that’s torched until melted) and the jalapeno crusted burger (same deal, but with a corn chip/jalapeno/Mexican cheese mix plus guacamole, salsa and sour cream) as the new burgers for 2015.
The parmesan and jalapeno burgers beat out three other burgers in a public vote to make it onto the menu. Among the losers: the Deep Fried Oreo Burger (with patty deep fried in Oreo batter), which fell short by a mere eight votes, and a Thanksgiving-themed Holiday Express Burger, topped with stuffing and a cranberry-orange marmalade.
Also making its fair debut is the cronut, a doughnut-crossaint hybrid emerged from New York in 2013. In the pastry category, it joins the returning favorite Amish Doughnut — essentially a glazed doughnut the size of a child’s head.
Among other favorites coming back for another year are the Redneck Burger (topped with bacon, fried bologna, baked beans and potato sticks) and the Krispy Kreme Burger.
