St. Paul’s holds throwback service for Hillsborough alumni

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS – It was a scene out of the 1950s at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church – more than 60 years too late.

Recently, the church at 5103 N. Central Ave. hosted Hillsborough High School alumnus as well as spouses and friends of graduates from the 1950s. They donned coats, ties, hats and gloves for the second Throwback Sunday.

The Oct. 6 gathering – as well as the first in 2012 – was organized by Jimmy Dunn, a 1955 graduate, who married his wife, Eleanor, a 1954 graduate, in 1957 in the church, across from the school.

“We were looking at our wedding pictures and said everyone dressed with white gloves and hats,” Jimmy Dunn said. “I thought that the NFL and Major League Baseball have throwback games so why shouldn’t we have a throwback service.”

Approximately 75 people, including former Tampa Mayor Dick Greco, Hillsborough Class of 1951, participated. An ice cream social followed the 11 a.m. service.
