Painter injured when scaffolding collapses inside storage tank
LITHIA - A contract painter was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital this afternoon when the scaffolding he was on inside a water storage tank collapsed. Hillsborough County Water Department spokeswoman Michelle Van Dyke said the employee of Universal Painting, a subcontractor with the county, was inside a 5 million-gallon water storage tank painting when the scaffolding he was on collapsed. "I can't tell you how far he fell," Van Dyke said. "He rode the scaffolding down." What she could say is that the man apparently fractured his ankle, but that he is still being assessed. "We will follow up with an investigation of the incident," she said. The accident occurred about 1 p.m. this afternoon. The water plant is located on Lithia-Pinecrest Road near FishHawk Boulevard.
