SEFFNER — The executive director and family-programming coordinator at the North Brandon Family YMCA have cooked up some new and tried-and-true activities and events for nonmembers and members.
Family fun nights, with activities like movies, skits, game show contests, music, minute-to-win-it challenges, food and a safer version of paintball – dubbed splat ball and held on select Fridays — are “an opportunity for families to come out to the Y for activity and connection time,” said Darren Dannelly, the branch’s executive director.
The next family fun night will feature an obstacle-course competition for the whole family from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 24. It is free for members and $15 per entire nonmember family, regardless of how large it is.
The North Brandon Family YMCA, 3097 S. Kingsway Road, also offers preschool gymnastics with parent participation, Pool-a-Palooza activities on some Saturday afternoons, family Zumba and family water fitness.
Details about programs, activities and special events, some free, some with fees, are available by calling the neighborhood YMCA and visiting the branch’s online calendars which are updated monthly on their website and North Brandon Family YMCA Facebook page.
“Family activities strengthen our YMCA,” said Dannelly. “We want to connect parents with their children and children to their parents. We also want to connect families with other families. Creating a sense of community is important to the Y. We want to provide a resource for families to enjoy time together in a fun and safe way.”
The family fun activities were chosen with input from experts — families.
“We asked families to participate in a focus group and they gave us great feedback. [We asked them] if you see something you like, let us know. If you know of something that we should try, let us know,” said Dannelly. “Serving families is why we are here.”
