Live from Disney: Winter meetings update, day 1

UPDATE, 6:14: The Rays continued talks with no major moves seemingly close, but did make a small deal, acquiring INF Joey Wendle from the A's. Wendle, 27, has spent parts of the last two seasons in the majors, hitting .266 in 36 games. He is a lefty hitter, has played mostly second base and has an option left so he can be sent to the minors. … The Cubs are also in on Colome. … The has also been the predictable heavy interest in Archer, with the Braves, Brewers and Twins joining the field that already includes the Cubs and Cardinals. As an exec with a competing club said when asked how many teams were in on Archer, "Who wouldn't be?" … An agent who has done business with the Angels suggested they may be the best trade partner for the Rays regarding Longoria.

UPDATE, 10:30: In addition to the Cardinals, the Rockies and Mets are considered hot in pursuit of Rays closer Alex Colome. …. Keep hearing the Angels as a potential landing spot for 3B Evan Longoria if the Rays deal him. … Rays manager Kevin Cash was first up in the interview room today and talked about their bullpen, facing the Yankees with Giancarlo Stanton, possibly having an eight-man bullpen and adding speed, such as Mallex Smith, to the lineup, among other things.

DEVELOPING: The winter meetings kick off in earnest today at Disney, and the Rays have plenty to talk about.

With GM Erik Neander acknowledging the Rays are open to "anything and everything" there has been plenty of discussion about them trading some and maybe most of their high-paid veterans.

As a result there have been plenty of rumors regarding RHP Chris Archer (with the Brewers among the latest) and RHP Alex Colome (Rockies) and franchise cornerstone 3B Evan Longoria, who told the Times as a result he feels somewhat in limbo.

Manager Kevin Cash will be in the media room this morning to share his thoughts.

More later as the day unfolds.
