A forgotten Christmas classic from the UK

Holiday week marches on with columnist Kevin Wuench:

For military personnel, the holidays mean sometimes being away from home and apart from family. It is that sentiment that has made Stop The Calvary by Jona Lewie one of the U.K.'s favorite holiday songs of all time.

Jona Lewie had a small U.K. hit in 1980 with You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties but nothing could have predicted the success of Stop The Calvary, which was a No. 1 hit in many European countries. Though written about WWI, the lyrics of "wish I was home for Christmas" was a sentiment shared by current members of the military and anyone who can't be at home for Christmas.

The video for Stop The Calvary starts in the trenches of the battlefield and its use of happy horns for the background music belies the angst and the cynical lyrics of the song. After Stop The Calvary, Lewie never had another Top 40 hit in his native U.K., although Stop The Calvary keeps coming around each holiday season in Europe becoming one the signature Christmas songs of the season.
