In the early ’80s, this duet kept Steve Winwood still in the game

Our Stuck in the '80s historian Kevin Wuench returns with this report on Steve Winwood:

Pop music has enjoyed all sorts of duets between husband and wife. Some that come to mind are Sonny and Cher, James Taylor and Carly Simon and lest we forget the Captain and Tennille. By admission, the '80s was not a great decade for husband-wife duets. With exception of Ashford and Simpson and Timbuk 3, I am hard pressed to think of a charting husband-wife single unless we consider Steve Winwood and his wife with Still In The Game.

While there were a lot of married couples that were in bands together like Miami Sound Machine, Quarterflash and X – a straight husband and wife duet was pretty rare in the '80s. In 1982, Steve Winwood followed up his successful Arc Of The Diver album with Talking Back To The Night. The second single off the album (following Valerie) was Still In The Game, which featured Steve's wife Nicole.  It peaked at No. 47 on the pop charts.

The video for Still In The Game is a sweet performance of Steve and Nicole harmonizing. Nicole Weir was a backup singer for Winwood earlier in his career and the two were married from 1978 to 1986. Nicole passed away in 2005 with a rare blood disease. Steve would remarry in 1987 to his current wife Eugenia and the couple have raised their four kids in Tennessee.
