An area of tropical moisture in the Gulf of Mexico will keep temperatures down today, but under cloudy skies and an increased chance of scattered thunderstorms in the Tampa Bay area.
Some northern areas are seeing heavy downpours this morning as the system, heading toward the Yucatan peninsula, creates moist conditions with winds coming from the south, News Channel 8 meteorologist Leigh Spann said.
There is a 60 percent chance of rain today, with a below-average high of 88.
That moisture, coupled with a cold front to the north, will bring heavy downpours and up to 3-6 inches of rain in the panhandle.
The showers may continue overnight, but rain chances drop to 40 percent on Saturday as more typical summertime conditions return with partly cloudy skies and mainly afternoon storms.
