Tornado watch as storms affect Tampa area

Published:   |   Updated: March 17, 2014 at 06:10 PM

The Tampa Bay area is under a Tornado Watch as a wet, and potentially dangerous, St. Patrick’s Day continues.

The Tornado Watch that was in effect until 11 p.m., however, has been lifted in Hillsborough, Hernando, Pasco and Pinellas counties. It remains in effect for Desoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, Polk and Sarasota counties.

Some areas in the northern Tampa Bay region started seeing rain this morning, with heavier downpours expected to arrive in the immediate Tampa area early this afternoon, News Channel 8 meteorologist Bryan Bennett said.

The storms, moving in off the Gulf of Mexico, could also spawn strong winds and a chance of tornadoes.

Highs today will be in the low- to mid-70s, with lows in the low- to mid-60s.

The rain will continue through today, with gradual clearing on Tuesday and a sunny, pleasant work week ahead.
