Heavy rains bring flooding to Treasure Coast

JUPITER – Heavy rains during Florida’s dry season left widespread flooding along part of the state’s Atlantic coast.

The National Weather Service says the Boynton Beach area received 22.21 inches of rain Thursday, sometimes at a rate of 5 inches an hour. Other areas in St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties also received a foot of rain or more.

South Florida Water Management District officials said Friday that the overnight rains fell at an “incredible rate” but the canal system handled the storm well. Officials said while flooding snarled traffic and prompted some school closings, residential neighborhoods mostly were not affected.

Martin County Fire Rescue officials say a possible tornado damaged 30 Hobe Sound homes. No injuries were reported.

More rain was expected today.
