Go Fishing: Topwaters tearing it up in Bay area

Published:   |   Updated: September 6, 2013 at 10:53 PM

This week, the Bay area flats seemed to explode with action. bluefish, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and redfish were all easy pickings this week.

The light morning winds made topwater plug action just incredible. The MirrOlure Top Dog series in natural colors produced well. Just find the bait schools that are on almost every flat right now and work the topwater plugs all around them. The explosions are awesome.

As the sun gets up ,fish the deeper flats using quarter-ounce jig heads with the Strike King Redfish Magic 4-inch glass minnows or MirrOlure Lil Johns for great results. Your strike zone is the first 10 inches just above the grass, so work your baits slowly through that zone.

Snook season opened this past weekend, so be sure to gently release fish that are not in the slot, as our fishery was not ready for this opening and we need to do our part to ensure the growth of this special fishery. I am practicing catch and release only for snook and urge you all to do the same.

Offshore, captain Billy is wrecking the red and gag grouper and catching nice limits of mangrove snapper on every trip. The bite is best starting in at least 45 feet of water, but there are great numbers of mangroves and some gags on the Bay area bridges and rock piles.
