TAMPA — All Bob Johnson ever wanted to do was be involved in golf. He tried other careers, but golf was in his blood.
He loved to teach, he loved to play — but he was pretty good at making things, too.
In fact, Johnson found he liked to make golf clubs, customized to every particular golfer.
Anyone who knows golf knows that no two swings are alike; similarly, no two golf clubs are the same. As Johnson sees it, getting customized clubs means that the tools then fit the golfer, not the other way around. He’s been teaching the game for more than 40 years and has been making golf clubs for more than 30 years. And his business is portable — he works all over the Tampa Bay area and is a regular at golf demo days throughout Hillsborough County as well as a regular at some of the top courses in the Northwest section of the county.
It all started with Johnson’s fascination with golf shafts, the part of the club between the grip and the head.
“I just kept at it,” Johnson said. “I couldn’t believe how many different kinds of shafts there were and how many people were playing with shafts that didn’t fit their game. If you have the right shaft and the right club, it doesn’t matter what brand you are using. If you have it the right way, you can hit it longer and straighter than anyone.”
And when it comes to the right clubs, Johnson says that cost isn’t always king.
“I don’t want people to spend a lot of money on my clubs,” said Johnson. “You want to pay $300 for a driver? I can sell you a better one that fits you perfectly for $150. I love the game and just want to make clubs, sell them to people who love the game, and do it forever.”
