Now coming to you through the airwaves ...

Published:

When I heard a new radio station was going on the air here in Sun City Center, it brought back some great memories. Years ago when I was the marketing director for a hospital in Punta Gorda, I was the host of a talk radio show called “Your Health Matters.” Every week I had a different guest from the medical profession discussing everything from how anesthesia works to new cardiac procedures. One week my show would be about the benefits of yoga and the next it would be about controlling diabetes.

It was so much fun to do, and I loved getting feedback from listeners. It’s like the feedback I get for writing this column.

So imagine my glee when Peter Schwartz, station manager for WSCQ 96.3 FM, came to the chamber and asked me if I’d like to be a part of this new endeavor. We came up with the idea of another weekly show, talking about all kinds of topics of interest to Sun City Center residents. It’s called “About the Town” and debuted last Wednesday at 11 a.m.

If you haven’t discovered this new gem in our town, you need to tune in. Peter and the volunteer staff have done a truly bang-up job with the station, bringing us great selections of easy listening music interspersed with a few informational segments like mine. And unlike other stations with programming that would fit anywhere, everything on the station is local to us.

This is public broadcasting, so there are no annoying commercials. The companies who support the station are mentioned as underwriters, and so far many of our local businesses are lining up to be a part.

My first guest was Craig Latimer, supervisor of elections for Hillsborough County. We discussed this month’s primary election and encouraged residents to get out and vote.

In weeks to come, I’ll have guests who will update us on a new cancer support group in town, the ongoing Community Association construction project, various nonprofit fundraisers and the Emergency Squad’s 50th anniversary. We’ll hear what’s going on in the job market from representatives of CareerSource Tampa Bay and learn of scams aimed at senior citizens. If it’s of interest, if it’s something you should know, it’ll be on my show. And if you want to call in and add your two cents, dial (813) 331-3955 and let us hear from you.

Today at 11 a.m., my guest will be Suzy Vong, the winner of the chamber’s first honorary mayor’s race. Suzy was announced and crowned at last week’s monthly membership luncheon. Other candidates were Bob Powers, chief of the SCC Security Patrol, and Rosie Korfant, activities coordinator for JSA Medical Group. All three worked tirelessly the past six weeks to raise money for their favorite charities. They are the real winners.

My guest on Sept. 3 will be Jim Haney with the Military Order of the World Wars. Our Sun City Center chapter recently won a national award and is very involved in the Youth Leadership Conference. Get all the details in that broadcast. And if you miss the show, you can read about it that same morning in my column in The Sun.

So please tune in and find out what’s going on About the Town. It’s about your town!

Dana Dittmar is the CEO of the Sun City Center Area Chamber of Commerce.
