New doughnut shop is more than haven for sweets

If you love doughnuts, muffins and sandwiches there's a new shop in town you may want to try.

Elite Donut, which originally was located in Brandon, opened in the Cypress Village Shopping Center about a month ago, and folks are lining up before its doors open at 5:30 a.m. to get their morning sugar fix.

Owner Phanna Meng said she relocated to Ruskin when the Brandon location lost business due to traffic-pattern issues on State Road 60. She chose the new site because of its proximity "to other businesses in the area," including Bealls and Home Depot.

Many of her loyal customers are driving all the way from Brandon to get her doughnuts, she said.

Meng, 62, who still lives in Brandon, comes from a long line of bakers. She learned the business when she was a teenager from her parents, aunts and uncles. Many family members still have doughnut shops in Daytona, Vero and Cocoa Beach.

Although her passion was always to own a doughnut shop, she worked full time while raising her children as an assembly line worker for SEH America, a semi-conductor business in Washington state. After 28 years, she decided it was time to fulfill her passion and move to Florida to open her shop.

"I love baking." said Meng. "I enjoy helping customers — and I got to quit my job."

So far the doughnut shop has had a steady flow of customers.

"I love their products, especially the doughnuts," said Andy Oothuizer, a resident of Sun City Center. "The apple fritters are delicious."

Oothuizer said he likes how he can order sandwiches a la carte, literally choosing from dozens of items on the menu to suit his cravings of the day.

Elite Donut Shop, 3824 State Road 674, has 36 different types of doughnuts, doughnut holes and muffins and features a daily specialty doughnut. In addition to its baked goods, the shop also serves a wide selection of hot and cold sandwiches, tropical smoothies and ice cream.

Catering and delivery service are available.

The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 5:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
