Softball previews: Friday's region semifinals

Countryside (21-6) at Riverview (17-10): Ayanna Andrews tripled, scoring Shatia Wallace, who reached on a passed ball, in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Countryside a 1-0 victory over East Bay in the quarterfinals.

Florida commitment and sophomore pitcher Alyssa Bache struck out 10 to earn the win.

Riverview freshman Bianka Bell's two-run single highlighted a four-run first inning and freshman pitcher Taylor McCoy controlled the mound as the Sharks Riverview held on for a 5-3 victory against Mitchell to advance.

Bloomingdale (21-8) at River Ridge (21-7): Bloomingdale sophomore shortstop McKenzie Carter hit a 0-2 pitch into left field to score Destani Frye in the top of the 12th inning to give the Bulls a 1-0 victory over Land O'Lakes in the quarterfinals.

Bulls' starter Kaylyn Camacho had 20 strikeouts to earn the shutout win.

River Ridge defeated Newsome, 2-1, to advance.

These two teams met earlier in the season, with Bloomingdale defeating River Ridge in the Jon Sinclair Memorial Spring Fling tournament championship.

Plant (21-6) at Chamberlain (26-2): Plant catcher Ashley Schnitzler went 2-for-3 and drove in third baseman Lizzy Mischo in the second inning while senior pitcher Kayla Suskauer retired the first nine batters she faced and controlled the mound to seal a 1-0 win over Palm Harbor in the quarterfinals.

Chamberlain first baseman and USF commitment Stephanie Medina blasted a home run in the fourth inning and junior catcher and Penn State commitment Kasie Hatfield drove in two runs in the fourth to give the Chiefs a 3-0 win over East Lake Tuesday.

District rivals, Chamberlain and Plant have met three times this season, with the nationally-ranked Chiefs getting the best of Plant each time.

Tampa Catholic (16-3) at St. Pete Catholic (23-3): Tampa Catholic freshman pitcher Tory Bohanan allowed five hits and struck out five batters with no walks and helped her own cause with three singles, two runs scored and a stolen base to lead the Crusaders, 5-1, over Bishop Verot in the quarterfinals.

St. Pete Catholic is coming off a 16-1 win over Sarasota Cardinal Mooney.

Tampa Catholic lost to St. Pete Catholic twice during the regular season and again the in the district title game, 5-4.

Seffner Christian (12-8) at Cambridge (17-7): Cambridge is coming off a 5-4 win over Sonrise Christian while Seffner Christian cruised to an 18-4 win over Bayshore Christian.

Seffner Christian defeated Cambridge earlier in the season, 16-10.

Seffner Christian advanced to the region championship last season, only to fall to St. Petersburg Canterbury.
