History

Brandon will make its fourth state tournament appearance, while Lakewood will make its eighth. Brandon last advanced to the state tournament in 2000, when the Eagles lost 70-62 to nationally ranked Gainesville in the 5A state championship game. Lakewood lost to Winter Park Lake Howell in the state championship last season but won the 5A title in 2005. The Spartans won the Class 4A title in 2002, the program's only other state championship.

Matchups

Brandon 6-foot-8 power forward/center Evan Ravenel, who has signed with Boston College, and Lakewood 6-9 center Michael Morrison, who has signed with George Mason, will battle in the middle. In the region final against Lake Howell, Ravenel (15.6 ppg, 10.6 rpg) had 23 points and 21 rebounds. Morrison (14.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg) had 13 in the region final against Pinellas Park. Lakewood's guard play has caused problems for many teams this season, led by 5-9 point guard Reginald Reed and 6-2 junior shooting guard Shamon Cox. Reed is averaging 8.1 points and 7.7 assists per game, while Cox is averaging 10.7 points and 4.0 rebounds. Brandon seniors Blake Allen (5-11) and Tarron Stewart (6-0) have been the best 1-2 guard combo in Hillsborough County this season, averaging 18.3 and 15.1 points, respectively. Brandon forward Marcus Morrison, a 6-6 wingman, is averaging 15.1 points and 10.3 rebounds.

Ravenel said he, along with Allen, have been playing against Lakewood's Morrison since they were 12, when they started playing summer AAU ball. ... Allen needs five points to reach 2,000 for his varsity career. ... Lakewood has lost only two games this season (Pinellas Park, 53-44, and Berkeley Prep, 78-64). ... In January, Brandon coach Mark Hermann became the all-time winningest coach in program history, surpassing former coach Frank Vining's record of 269 wins. ... Allen has received interest from Boston University, The Citadel, St. Bonaventure, American and South Carolina Upstate. ... Brandon's Morrison has committed to University of Tampa.
