ST. PETERSBURG -- Good thing this was a Kickoff Classic. Robinson can forget about it. Coach Mike DePue already has.
"We're still 0-0," DePue said following the Knights' 47-12 loss to St. Petersburg.
The Knights didn't take care of the ball and it hurt them early. St. Petersburg linebacker Kelvin Powell recovered two fumbles in the early going. Throw in an interception and the host Green Devils took a 17-0 lead late in the second quarter and Robinson never could recover.
"Our motivation is to help the team first and then make a play," Powell said. "Our offense promised if they got the ball they would make a touchdown so I thought that's what I had to do: make a play for my offense. As you see, it worked."
Once the Green Devils got the ball, Coach Joe Fabrizio, never shy to pound the football with a running game, over and over called on fullback Ben Sams. The junior scored the first three St. Petersburg touchdowns on runs of 14, 2 and 5 yards. His third touchdown put the Green Devils up 23-6. He finished the night with 200 yards on 14 carries.
Any chance the Knights had of coming back seemed lost when, deep in their own territory, a snap sailed over the head of quarterback A.J. Phillips and St. Petersburg's Nick McNeal fell on the loose ball in the end zone for a 30-6 lead with just more than two minutes left in the first half.
The bright spot for Robinson was a 90-yard kickoff return by Frankie Williams in the second quarter.
