TEAMS
PLANT
WHERE: Class 2A state tournament, The Golf Club at Bridgewater, Lakeland
WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. start
ROAD TO STATE: Shot 302 team total at Silver Dollar to win District 10 title; shot 315 team total at Fox Hollow to win Region 4 tournament.
LAST APPEARANCE/TITLES: 2006/5 (1929, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1936)
PLAYERS: Doug Letson, Jr.; Charlie Martin, Jr.; Charles Silverfield, So.; Cory Castillo, Sr.; Carter Ilgenfritz, Sr.
OUTLOOK: The Panthers are the most experienced county team, as all five golfers have played at the state tournament before; Letson, Martin, Castillo and Ilgenfritz were members of last year's state team, while Silverfield, a transfer from Berkeley Prep, was an individual state qualifier last season. Consistency has been one of the biggest keys for success for this team, which is led by Letson, who finished as the individual runner-up at both the district and region tournaments. Plant finished eighth out of 16 teams in last year's field, but Mike James' squad could do much better this time.

BERKELEY PREP
WHERE: Class 1A state tournament, Southern Dunes Golf and
Country Club, Haines City
WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. start
ROAD TO STATE: Shot 319 team total at The Eagles to finish as the District 14 runner-up; shot 314 team total at The Eagles to finish as the Region 5 runner-up.
LAST APPEARANCE/TITLES: 2002/none
PLAYERS: Blake Morris, Fr.; John Mills, Sr.; R.J. Campbell, Jr.; Mike Alberts, Sr.; Austin Suarez, Jr.
OUTLOOK: It shouldn't come as a shock to see the Bucs in the state tournament field, as Tom Shea's group has proven all season that it is capable of firing low rounds. At the top is Morris, a freshman transfer from Connecticut who won the District 14 tournament and finished fifth at the Region 5 tournament. Alberts has been the team's most improved player this season, shaving 10 strokes off his average from 2006, while Campbell, a three-year starter, has been the team's most consistent player.

INDIVIDUALS

TRENT STOKER, TAMPA CATHOLIC
WHERE: Class 1A state tournament, Southern Dunes Golf and
Country Club, Haines City
WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. start
ROAD TO STATE: Shot 10-over 82 at The Eagles to finish tied for ninth at District 14 tournament (team qualified); shot 1-over 73 at The Eagles to finish as Region 5 runner-up
OUTLOOK: Stoker, the first Crusaders golfer to qualify for the state tournament in program history, was beaming after the Region 5 tournament, mostly because he felt his game had finally come together at the right time. The junior was Tampa Catholic's most consistent golfer this season, leading the Crusaders with a 41 nine-hole average.

IAN McCONNELL, RIVERVIEW
WHERE: Class 2A state tournament, The Golf Club at Bridgewater, Lakeland
WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. start
ROAD TO STATE: Shot 4-under 68 at Walden Lake to win District 11 tournament (team qualified); shot 3-over 75 at Fox Hollow and won a one-hole playoff to win Region 4 tournament.
OUTLOOK: McConnell, a home-schooled student who represents Riverview, is perhaps the hottest county golfer entering the state tournament. The sophomore is making his first appearance at state, but he's coming in with a lot of momentum, and he has proven he is capable of winning when it counts.

TEAMS
PLANT
WHERE: Class 2A state tournament, The Club at Eaglebrooke,
Lakeland
WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. start
ROAD TO STATE: Shot 345 team total at Heritage Harbor to win District 10 title; shot 357 team total at Heritage Isles to finish as Region 4 runner-up.
LAST APPEARANCE/TITLES: 2003/none
PLAYERS: Bryce Alley, Sr.; MacKenzie Puryear, Sr.; Genevieve King, Jr.; Kaitlin McPeak, So.; Lauren Jansen, Sr.
OUTLOOK: Plant's regular-season record wasn't among the best in the county, but the Panthers have turned it on in the postseason when it really mattered. Plant's worst score that counted toward the team total in the district tourney was a 92, and three Panthers shot 92 or better in the region tourney. Alley, Puryear and King are a formidable threesome at the top for the Panthers, and Jansen, with an 89 in the district tournament, showed that she's capable of putting together a solid round.

WHARTON
WHERE: Class 2A state tournament, The Club at Eaglebrooke,
Lakeland
WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. start
ROAD TO STATE: Shot 369 team total at Walden Lake to finish as District 11 runner-up; shot 337 team total at Heritage Isles to win Region 4 title.
LAST APPEARANCE/TITLES: 2006/none
PLAYERS: Shena Yang, Jr.; Christina Vail, Jr.; Brittany Bradshaw, Fr.; Kate Demick, Jr.; Jennifer Schutt, So.
OUTLOOK: The Wildcats are making their second consecutive trip to the state tournament under Coach Maxine Stark, with Yang, Vail and Demick playing for last year's state team. Wharton played much better at the region tournament after a disappointing runner-up finish in the district. If the Wildcats get rounds this week like they did from Yang, who could contend for an individual title, and Vail in the region tournament (both shot career bests), Wharton could crack the top 10 at state for the second consecutive season.

BERKELEY PREP
WHERE: Class 1A state tournament, Ridgewood Lakes Golf and Country Club, Davenport
WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. start
ROAD TO STATE: Shot 355 team total at The Eagles to win District 14 title; shot 362 team total at The Eagles to finish as Region 5 runner-up.
LAST APPEARANCE/TITLES: 2003/none
PLAYERS: Kim Carpenter, Jr.; Kyleen Carpenter, Jr.; Lindsey Weiss, So.; Jessica Hahn, Fr.; Desiree Meyncke, So.
OUTLOOK: The Bucs closed the regular season with nine consecutive wins, and they have continued to roll in the postseason. The Carpenter twins have been the forces at the top for Tom Shea's squad all season; Kim and Kyleen finished first and second in the district, and seventh and sixth in the region, respectively. Weiss, Meyncke and Hahn must continue to shoot well for the Bucs to have some success.

INDIVIDUALS
AMY WEST, DURANT
WHERE: Class 2A state tournament, The Club at Eaglebrooke, Lakeland
WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. start
ROAD TO STATE: Shot 4-under 68 at Walden Lake to win District 11 tournament (team qualified); shot 1-over 73 at Heritage Isles to finish as Region 4 runner-up.
OUTLOOK: West, a junior, enters the state tourney as one of the county's hottest golfers. Her score at the Region 4 tournament was only her third over-par round in her last seven, and no round has been worse than 2-over. West also has state tournament experience as a member of the Cougars' state team last season, which is a big plus.
