In this case, this was a close call that went in the Rays’ favor – and it didn’t even occur on the field.
A self-photo that Sun Sports Rays reporter Kelly Nash took from the stands of Fenway Park has gone viral, mainly for the good fortune that she was just inches away from being seriously injured.
The photo shows Nash smiling naturally with a baseball, hit during batting practice, in the background and just inches away from her head.
Nash told Fox Sports Florida that she was in Boston to work on a future Rays feature and visit family when she decided to check out batting practice on Saturday before an Astros-Red Sox game.
She was above the Green Monster when she took the picture.
“Producer Art Dryce had called out 'heads up!' a few times while I was taking pictures around the left field section, but none of those balls actually fell close to me, so I took my chances turning my back on batting practice for a picture,” Nash told Fox Sports Florida.
Nash said she was shocked to see the ball in the background, unaware that it came so close to striking her.
Her reaction: Laughter.
“I thought, ‘you have got to be kidding me, maybe there are really angels in the outfield.’ ” Nash said. “I actually brought the movie with me on the trip and had it in my bag at the game.”
Maybe next time, she’ll consider packing a baseball glove as well.
