Rays Triple Play: Notes from camp

He said it ...

RHP Alex Cobb knows what it’s like to be struck in the head with a line drive, having missed two months last season with a concussion, so he texted, “Welcome to the club,” Sunday to LHP Matt Moore after learning Moore was struck in the mouth by a line drive against the Red Sox in Fort Myers.

“He was a man,” Cobb said Monday. “He finished the play. Showed me up.”

Got to be the paddle

3B Evan Longoria received a customized pingpong paddle from PaddleYou, a company that puts your photo on one side of a paddle. Longoria’s new paddle shows his jersey hanging from his locker. The Rays have a pingpong table at the complex and it is used before and after workouts.

By the numbers

The Rays woke up Monday tops in the Grapefruit League in batting average (.285), slugging percentage (.445) and OPS (.787). They led all major-league teams in ERA (2.99), runs allowed (79) and hits allowed (186).
