Rays Triple Play: Notes from camp

TRIPLE PLAY

Coach of the day

Rays manager Joe Maddon nominated himself for coach of the day Wednesday when he hopped off the team bus and helped direct the driver through a lane made narrower by traffic cones.

“Being an RV-ist, I empathized with the driver,” Maddon said.

Boarding the bus became a chore when coaches Dave Martinez and Tom Foley directed the driver to pull away each time Maddon reached the door.

“I had to do a slight jog to catch up,” Maddon said. “They thought it was funny.”

No PB&J?

Fans can pick the Rays’ postgame spread after their March 29 game at Double-A Montgomery. The Rays and Wind Creek Hospitality have partnered for the “Feed the Rays” promotion. Go to biscuitsbaseball.com to vote for one of three menus:

Grilled filet mignon with a demi-glace truffle butter, boursin, twice-baked red potatoes and grilled vegetables.

Smoked pork loin with a honey barbecue glaze, seasoned potato wedges and roasted vegetables.

Baked half chicken, wild rice and grilled asparagus.

Treatment of the day

OF Matt Joyce left Wednesday’s game after the first inning because of a stiff neck. Maddon said it’s not serious.

“Probably a couple of heat packs and a rub-down and he’ll be all right,” Maddon said.
