Rays Triple Play: Notes from camp

Escobar Power & Light

“This guy is instant energy. He totally is. They should name an energy bar after him. The Esco-Bar, how about that?”

Rays manager Joe Maddon talking about the energy SS Yunel Escobar brings to the team.

Maddon also described Escobar this way: “He’s like a socket, man. You plug into it. The rest of the players can plug into him and he provides energy.”

The Cup

An inflatable Stanley Cub hangs from the ceiling next to RHP Jeremy Hellickson’s locker. It will go to the winner of the video hockey tournament being hotly contested each day by some of the pitchers. RHP Mark Lowe, playing as the Edmonton Oilers, is undefeated and awaits someone to come out of the loser’s bracket.

Attendance up

The Rays have yet to record a sellout through their first six games at Charlotte Sports Park but attendance is up 15 percent over last season. The Rays are averaging 5,381 to the park that has 5,028 fixed seats and can hold 6,823 with the berms and boardwalk.
