First came the mini basketball hoop, courtesy of INF Tim Beckham that was hung from the top of the lockers at one end of the clubhouse and draws a small crowd each morning. Now, there is a key and a 3-point line made of tape, courtesy of RHP Heath Bell. No dunking, though. “You don’t want to roll an ankle,” 2B Ben Zobrist said.
So as not to waste the day
SS Hak-Ju Lee, scratched from Friday’s lineup against the Blue Jays in Dunedin because he forgot to pack his knee brace, was given another chore.
“What he did do was he was assigned to keeping the card in the dugout so (bench coach) Davey (Martinez) didn’t have to do that, so we got some utility out of him,” manager Joe Maddon said.
Feeding the masses
Maddon made 60 Italian hoagies Saturday morning, each with red peppers, ham, salami, white American cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, red peppers, olive oil, onions, salt and pepper. Maddon would have made more, except “the Peralta Gang” came in and took about 10 of the hot rolls before Maddon got started.
