Rays Triple Play: Notes from camp

Published:   |   Updated: March 5, 2014 at 07:00 AM

Number of the day

7: Pitchers used Tuesday against the Red Sox, two fewer than the Rays used the last time the teams met. The Rays set an MLB postseason record with nine pitchers used in Game 4 of the ALDS.

Bat Boy of the day

Pitching coach Jim Hickey served as the bat boy during the first inning Tuesday because only one bat boy showed up for the game. Other than not having a second bat ready when Wil Myers broke his while fouling off a pitch, Hickey received high marks from manager Joe Maddon for his work in a pinch.

Oh, what a day

It may have been the fifth spring training game for both clubs, but the Rays and Red Sox played Tuesday at a pace that was midseason form — a snail-like 3 hours, 28 minutes.
