The Tampa Bay Rays placed RHP Brandon Gomes on the 15-day disabled list Friday afternoon with a right lat strain and recalled RHP Josh Lueke from Triple A Durham.
Lueke has had a solid start to his season. In 13-2/3 innings over 10 games he has struck out 20 batters, walked three, allowed 11 hits and has a 1.32 ERA. He has six saves.
Lueke worked two innings and threw 29 pitches Thursday night against Syracuse, so it is unlikely he will be available Friday night against the San Diego Padres.
Gomes appeared in 14 games, throwing 11-2/3 innings. He allowed 10 hits, seven earned runs, struck out 16 and walked two – one intentionally. He has a 5.40 ERA.
The move to the disabled list with the strained back muscle is retroactive to May 8, though Gomes did warm up in the bullpen Thursday night.
