Rays' promotional giveaways include Zim Bear

It's awesome. It's disturbing. It's cuddly. It's creepy.

It's the Zim Bear, which will be given to the first 10,000 fans who attend the June 29 game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers at Tropicana Field.

"What can I say?" Rays special adviser Don Zimmer said Wednesday while looking at a picture of the Zim Bear, which is a teddy bear with Zimmer's face.

"Wait (until) the kids see this," Zimmer said. "You know who'd get a kick out of this? Joe Torre would get a kick out of this."

The giveaway is one of 30 on a promotional schedule that includes an Evan Longoria walk-off home run figurine (April 21) and mini drum set (Sept. 9), a Jeremy Hellickson rookie of the year figurine, Desmond Jennings, James Shields, Joe Maddon and D.J. Kitty bobbleheads, a David Price jersey wallet and eight different T-shirts.

But the one garnering the most attention at camp Wednesday in Port Charlotte after the schedule was released was Zim's bear. Twitter was buzzing with likes and dislikes for the sweet and scary promotion.

"It's very complimentary," Maddon said while looking at a picture of the Zim Bear. "It's Zim. It's cuddly. It's warm. It's cute. It's something you definitely don't want to take to bed with you. I don't want my 2-year-old putting that in the crib. That could be life-altering right there. I think it's more appropriate on a grownup's desk than in the crib."

In other giveaways, new secondary mascot D.J. Kitty gets its own Bobblehead, right along with Maddon, James Shields, Kyle Farnsworth, Desmond Jennings and Matt Moore.

The fun begins during the season-opening series, when the Rays give away schedule magnets on April 6, the home opener against the New York Yankees, and Raymond Cowbells to the first 10,000 kids on April 8.

With the exception of Opening Day, Friday games will feature a T-shirt giveaway or a Hellickson 2011 Rookie of the Year figurine, the Maddon Bobblehead and a logoed Burst Koozie.

Sunday games continue to be Family Fun Days with giveaways that include a Bobblehead series of Farnsworth (May 20 vs. Atlanta); Jennings (June 3 vs. Baltimore); James Shields (July 1 vs. Detroit); Moore (July 22 vs. Seattle); and   DJ Kitty (Aug. 5 vs. Baltimore).

In addition, the Rays will give away a Rays Recycled Youth Hat (April 22 vs. Minnesota), Joe Maddon Sunglasses (May 6 vs. Oakland), a David Price Jersey Wallet (June 17 vs. Miami), a Rays Ice Cream Bowl and Spoon Set (July 15 vs. Boston) and an Evan Longoria Mini Drum Set (Sept. 9 vs. Texas).

Single-game tickets for regular-season home games go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m., exclusively through raysbaseball.com. Tickets go on sale on Monday at 10 a.m. in person through all Ticketmaster outlets, the Rays Tampa Store and Tropicana Field box office, as well as over the phone at 1-888-FAN-RAYS and 1-800-745-3000, or online at raysbaseball.com.
