TORONTO — The Rays placed catcher Ryan Hanigan on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon with a right hamstring injury.
“It was tough,” Hanigan said of the decision. “I’m not getting better now.”
Hanigan said he was “kind of talked into it.”
He has maintained since the day he suffered the injury in Anaheim on May 15 that the injury was not severe enough to send him to the DL.
But nearly two weeks of treatment and rest hasn’t healed the hamstring. Hanigan tweaked the injury Monday while catching against the Blue Jays.
Hanigan said he is not sure when he will return. He has not had an MRI and the training staff do not suspect a tear. He plans to begin strength training in seven days.
Outfielder Kevin Kiermaier was recalled today to fill Hanigan’s spot on the roster. Kiermaier will actually take over the fifth outfielder’s spot vacated Monday when Brandon Guyer went on the DL with a fractured left thumb.
Ali Solis, recalled Tuesday, will continue to serve as the backup catcher.
