ST. PETERSBURG — Tampa Bay RHP Jake Odorizzi is excited to face the St. Louis Cardinals tonight in the opener of this two-game series.
A native of Highland, Ill., a suburb of St. Louis, Odorizzi spent many days at Busch Stadium, both the old and new park. He watched the Cards win the 2011 World Series and dreamed of someday pitching like St. Louis RHP Adam Wainwright, who pitches tonight.
Odorizzi knows everyone back home will see him pitch tonight when they turn on the TV to watch the Cardinals play.
“It will be pretty special, to be honest. He was one of the guys you want to model yourself after when you’re a young pitcher. He was one of the guys I watched,” Odorizzi said. “It will be a great opportunity to be on the same mound as him, and it will be an even better one if I’m able to beat him.”
