Rays notes: Hellickson not ready for Friday

Published:

RHP Jeremy Hellickson (right elbow surgery) will remain with Triple-A Durham and will make another rehab start this week for the Bulls. That means Hellickson will not rejoin the Rays on Friday when they play a day/night doubleheader in Baltimore.

Maddon said RHP Nate Karns and RHP Alex Colome are the candidates to be added to the roster Friday so the Rays have a second starter for the twin bill.

As for when Hellickson will return, Maddon was not certain.

“I think you have to understand the guy’s not pitched in a while, he’s coming off of surgery, he’s kind of going through spring training, and we want him to be performing well before he comes here, so even if he needs a little bit longer than one more start I don’t think there’s anything to be read into it other than he needs more time to pitch at the level that he’s capable of, pure and simple,” Maddon said.

“If he’s not ready then he’s not ready performance-wise. But health-wise it seems like he just keeps getting better.”
