HOUSTON - RHP Ryne Stanek, taken with the 29th overall pick, signed Tuesday for $1,758,300 - the suggested bonus for his slot.

Stanek, a University of Arkansas product, will report to the Rays' minor-league complex in Port Charlotte to get his arm back into shape, then join the Short-A team at Hudson Valley.

Rays executive VP of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said Stanek, 21, has everything he needs to be successful at the major-league level. He just needs to strengthen a few areas of his game.

"The core ingredients are in place for him to be really good, so now it's about molding and making him a finished product and get him here as soon as we can," he said.

The Rays will limit Stanek's workload this summer because of all the innings he pitched at Arkansas. He is scheduled to finish the year in the instructional league.

"Next spring we'll let him loose," Friedman said.

Roberts heads back to Durham

INF Ryan Roberts was optioned to Triple-A Durham to make room for LHP David Price, who was activated from the disabled list and faced the Astros.

Roberts left on a high note. He was 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs in Monday's 12-0 win.

"I don't know the last time I sent somebody out who had two home runs and three knocks and had himself a great game," Maddon said. "But he kind of knew that it might be forthcoming. He'll be back. The thing I want to say that I really appreciate (Monday) night was how well he handled that moment knowing there was a pretty good chance he'd be sent back the next day."

Noteworthy

RHP Alex Cobb (concussion) increased his throwing to 90 feet. His activities are still limited because he has vertigo. . RF Wil Myers joined Rocco Baldelli as the only players in team history to have 10 RBIs in the first 14 games of his career. . CF Desmond Jennings drove in his 30th run Monday. The Rays have seven players with at least 30 RBIs. It's the first time that's happened before the All-Star break in team history. ... Monday was the fifth two-hitter of the season for the Rays staff, matching to total for the 2012 season.
