The Tampa Bay Rays' Sam Fuld is back in the lineup today, showing just a small bruise on his left eyelid after bunting a foul ball Saturday off his left eye/forehead.
"I was hoping for a lot worse," he said of the lack of bruising. "A war wound."
As if he needs more bumps and bruises.
Fuld underwent a test for a concussion and a CAT scan Saturday and he said all tests were negative.
No one though to test the baseball, but the joke around the Trop today is the ball is on the 15-day disabled list.
Fuld was trying to bunt Elliot Johnson into scoring position during the bottom of the ninth inning of what became a Rays 2-1, 10-inning victory.
The ball ricocheted off the bat and hit him in the face.
"I never had that happen, not that I can remember," he said. "It was scary. I can still see the image of the ball coming right at my face."
He remained in the game, and eventually bunted foul on the third strike and was out.
"I wasn't too invested in bunting the next couple of pitches," he said. "I just held the bat out."
After being retired on what officially became a strike out, Fuld slammed his bat on the turf, snapping it in two above the handle.
"That adrenalin turns into a little negative energy," he said. "Adrenalin is a crazy thing."
