It took the Tampa Bay Rays 130 games this season before they encountered their first review of whether the catcher violated the blocking the plate rule instituted before this season.
It happened in the 10th inning Sunday, when Toronto Blue Jays C Dioner Navarro took a throw from LF Melky Cabrera and placed the tag on 2B Logan Forsythe, who tried to slide past the tag.
Rays manager Joe Maddon thought Navarro was blocking the plate and did not give Forsythe a lane to slide. Maddon, not a big fan of the new rule, said he didn’t think Navarro did anything wrong.
Maddon would like Major League Baseball to revert to allowing catchers to block the plate.
Forsythe said the lane was not there for very long.
“I saw the ball, and as I looked back to Navie it slowly disappeared,” he said.
Dive, Archer, dive
RHP Chris Archer allowed only one run for his fourth straight start when he pitched seven innings in Sunday’s win. But Archer’s performance will be best remembered for when he dived for a foul ball in front of the dugout.
Archer outraced 1B James Loney and C Curt Casali to the spot, but he came up short. It is unusual to see pitchers go after fly balls, yet Archer has done it a number of times this season.
“It may not be the smartest thing, but if there is a possibility of getting an out and throwing as few pitches as possible I’m going to do it,” Archer said. “It was out of reach. I thought I had a chance.”
