Wrestling: Brandon takes Graves tourney

BRANDON -

Asked if he needed a moment to catch his breath Saturday, Kevin Norstrem waved the thought off.

The Brandon wrestler had just dismantled an opponent, 16-4 in three rounds in the 132-pound finals of the Jim Graves Invitational, and he looked ready for more.

"I think I'm wrestling really well. My goal this year is just to be relentless," Norstrem said. "I'm not taking anybody lightly, no matter how inexperienced an opponent may be or what time it is in a match. I'm not going to stop."

That not only summed up his 10-0 weekend, but also that of the Eagles.

Brandon collected the team title of the 12th annual tournament with 667 points. Camden (Ga.) was second (547) and Glenbard North (Ill.) was third with 532 points.

Throughout Norstrem's match he showed his penchant for sound technical wrestling, scoring on takedowns almost at will.

Eagles coach Russ Cozart had a slight grin when he measured what his team did during the two-day tournament.

"I thought it was a great tournament," said Cozart, who set this event up to be a little more grueling than in the past, using a pool system. "The season's still young and I can see some improvement in my guys already. So I'm really happy where we're at. We've got a good road ahead of us."

Brandon will wrestle in the Hillsborough County tournament before heading to Collins Hills, Ga., for a tournament and then head to The Clash in Appleton, Minn.

Lennard heavyweight Fred Guevara had to endure the bitter with the sweet. He picked off the competition Friday and Saturday, making his way to the championship match.

In the finals against Camden's Alex Washington, he was pinned in the final 30 seconds.

"It was tough, extremely tough actually," Guevara said. "I didn't really think I would make it to second place. It's a real good improvement from last year. … I'm really glad I'm doing much better this year."
