Tampa Prep pitcher/first baseman Sam Martin verbally committed to Tulane University, according to a release from the Terrapins’ athletic department.
Martin, who was 6-2 with a 2.22 ERA and had 51 strikeouts during his junior season, helped the Terps to the Class 3A-District 8 title and a spot in a region final.
Martin hit .310 with four home runs, 24 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
Wiregrass Ranch hires McDougall
Wiregrass Ranch named Marshall McDougall, a former Florida State player and longtime minor-leaguer, as its head coach.
“I’ve always wanted to be a coach and wanted to really coach some of the older kids because they make adjustments much quicker,” McDougall said. “I’m excited because they have a great team and great kids already there. I’m really looking forward to this.”
McDougall is best known for his 7-for-7 performance against Maryland in 1999 that featured six home runs, 16 RBIs and 25 total bases, all NCAA single-game records.
Recent Jesuit grad Joey Galvis, who helped lead the Tigers to the Class 5A state championship last season, accepted a scholarship offer to play for Division II Rollins, Jesuit coach Neal Goldman said.
Galvis, a 6-foot-3 guard, was named 5A state tournament MVP and averaged 13.8 points, 4.0 steals and 3.2 assists.
Galvis becomes the fourth player from the championship team to move on to the next level, joining Devin Harris (East Tennessee State), Jack Fleming (Colgate) and JJ Weir (Rhodes College). Another player, forward Travis Johnson, will play football for Cincinnati .
